Building a Carport Concrete Slab in Gilbert, Arizona

We recently did a concrete project here in Gilbert, Arizona—a small 1.5-yard pour for a carport slab.

The homeowner wanted a space to store tools and equipment for his custom car rebuild shop. This slab will give him a solid surface to work on and a spot to keep everything organized.

Pouring Concrete with On-Site Mixing

For this pour, we went with a mobile mixer concrete supplier. Using a mobile mixer has a few advantages, especially for smaller jobs like this one.

The concrete is mixed directly on-site, right from the truck.

That means the mix is fresh and can be adjusted in real time if needed, like if water or more cement needs to be added.

Reinforcing with Wire Mesh for Durability

For added strength, wire mesh was added. This makes it stronger and minimizes the risk of cracks over time.

Cutting Control Joints

We tooled in three control joints to divide the slab into four sections.

Keeping it as square as possible with the four sections helps avoid any unwanted cracking.

Finishing Touches: A Clean Broomed Finish

We gave it a broomed finish. This finish provides a texture that adds traction. After that we stripped the forms, and the slab was good to go!

This was a fun little concrete job to work on, and I'm happy with the results.

With just a little more curing, the rocks can be pushed back into place up against the new concrete slab, giving it a clean finished look.

The homeowner was advised to put water on the slab later that day, and give a quick spray down on the existing shed panels and concrete, which will easily clean up any splatter or buildup from the pour.
